GCAP Course Instructing and Coordinating

Teaching supports what I value in the spirit of generativity and passing down wisdom to the next
generation of counsellors and psychologists. I first taught GCAP 631: Models of Counselling and Client
Change
as an Instructional Associate and after my appointment as Assistant Professor in the CAAP
program at AU. Early in my career, I also coordinated CAAP 639: Introductory Data Analysis.

I also instructed GCAP 634: Health Psychology for three years. I enjoyed grading the Health and Self-
Change assignment where students challenged themselves to improve a health habit or increase
healthy routines in their lives. I was also the course coordinator over this time period.

I was the course coordinator for both GCAP 651: Art Therapy History and Theory, a key course for our
graduate students from the Vancouver Art Therapy program; and GCAP 672: Group Counselling and
Process Skills
, which fosters development of graduate students’ ability to develop and facilitate
meaningful group counselling programs in their community.

I also taught GCAP 671: Developing a Working Alliance, which includes a face-to-face Summer Institute
component in Calgary. Meeting the students in person and practicing interpersonal counselling skills
was a highlight for me, besides classroom teaching which I thoroughly enjoy.

The counselling practicum (6 credit) course, GCAP 685: Advanced Counselling Practicum, is another
course I enjoy engaging face-to-face with students for a four-day seminar once each semester. In this
course, students engage in reflexivity to refine their personal theory of counselling and put these ideas
to practice with clients in their community practicum setting.

Over the past five years, I have focused on instruction and leadership in GCAP scholarship and research
courses. These include GCAP 691: Methods of Inquiry, which is our introduction to graduate level
research and evaluation knowledge, and an essential course determining student eligibility for the
thesis-route. I am also the course coordinator for GCAP 691. I also instruct and coordinate GCAP 695:
Specialization Seminar, Knowledge Transfer
, which is our course-based exit seminar where students
demonstrate competencies gained throughout the program, and write a manuscript for publication.

I have also coordinated and facilitated GCAP 696: Thesis I, which is our structured course for FHD
students enrolled in the thesis-route. Students develop their thesis research proposal in this course.
Likewise, I teach GCAP 693: Advanced Qualitative Methods for FHD graduate students conducting
qualitative investigations in their thesis research.

Course Development

Early in my career, I coordinated a revision of CAAP 639: Introductory Data Analysis, which focused on descriptive and inferential statistics designed to give graduate students with minimal statistical background sufficient competence to conduct basic statistical procedures.

I also coordinated a revision of GCAP 651: Art Therapy History and Theory; and for three years I managed the collaboration between the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute and our Master of Counselling program.

Likewise, I coordinated a revision of the GCAP 672: Group Counselling and Process Skills in 2013-2014.

I also developed GCAP 691: Methods of Inquiry and completed major revisions to the course over the past three years. I was very pleased to develop the Course Congress component of the course where students from all sections come together towards the end of the course. They convene for a virtual conference where students present the mini-research project completed within the course. I also developed GCAP 695: Specialization Seminar, Knowledge Transfer which is facilitated by faculty members to support student growth in scholarship as they complete their Master of Counselling.

Lastly, I have been involved in two FHD course development teams to create one research methods course across the faculty; as well as one course-based exit course across the faculty. At present, the courses remain distinct.
